Script #88

Beloved, and Script(s) are on a little hiatus until...

This is a good time to catch up on the preface and Genesis pages of Scratching the Surface available via the archives after clicking on; noting we will begin that adventure in September in worship, KDs, and the version of KD.

The preface is really important to understanding what Scratching the Surface is all about.

Three quickies FYI and prayers:

1. Mona will continue to provide music along with our singing nun for our first service as we begin our search for an accompanist for our second service.  A position description is being reviewed by our Personnel/Finance Committees before session deliberations preceding our formal search;

2. Here's an interesting one!  Some folks have asked why they don't receive KDs and Scripts.  Whoa.  Well, uh, that's because we posted a little thingy a few months ago that went something like this: "If you'd like to continue receiving..., let us know...If not, we will not send..."  As the Emperor said to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, "So there it is!"  If you know someone who's feeling left out, just tell 'em that we'll add their name to our mailing lists upon request.  815-544-3535 comes to mind; and

3. These are overwhelmingly exciting times on the corner of Lincoln and Main as our Lord enlightens, energizes, and enables us to expand the wineskin for the glory of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as a beacon for Him and safe haven for His.  Fresh off the spectacular expansion/renovation as led by our Project Team, a playground was envisioned than incarnated that provoked an over six decades member to exclaim he could not recall so many people working together on a project with such positive participation.  Now there's a movement to plant a pavilion next to the shed for multi-purposes including outdoor concerts, picnics, gatherings, and activities for all ages.  We're praying for seed $; and fresh off the playground participation, we know we've got the wherewithal to provide the labor and know-how!  Anyway, it's so obvious that our Lord is calling us into greater service for Him by being a beacon for Jesus and safe haven for all of His children: "Let the children come to Me!"

The harvest is ready; and our harvesters have been renewed as reinforcements are arriving with increasing regularity.

Praise the Lord!

Blessings and Love!

Script #85

If you're interested in some inspirations/indigestions from my recent wedding in Florida, click on for Detour or Deepening?

Speaking of inspirations/indigestions, I preached at the stated meeting of Blackhawk Presbytery on 6/12; and while that's not especially noteworthy to anyone at First or anywhere else, there's a story behind that inspiring/indigesting moment.

Aurora, Illinois' Westminster Presbyterian Church hosted the meeting; and the host pastor is supposed to preach at the worship service prior to the business session.

Chuck, our friend and my covenant brother who has preached here and is Westminster's pastor, told me that I was going to preach.

I said I did not want to preach at the presbytery meeting because I get enough of people judging me and my sermons at First and it's even worse when a bunch of clergy...

You know what I mean.

Despite my protests, he insisted.

Well, about an hour before the service, he revealed why he insisted I preach: "I asked God what I was supposed to preach about; and He told me, 'Kopp is supposed to preach.'"

Anyway, some members of First who heard it have insisted that I preach that sermon at First.  Again, I did not want to because it's pretty, uh, intense.  They have insisted.  So I will preach it this Sunday at 7:30 and 10:00 a.m.

It's either the most prophetic or pathetic...

You be the judge.

I'm just trying to be faithful; recalling what I tell homiletics students: "If it's not worth preaching twice, it's not worth preaching once."

Getting back to Chuck, he recommended this link on "courage" to me from his alma mater and I'm passing it on to you.

Script #84

While KDs will be focusing on Scratching the Surface over the next several months, there will be an occasional detour to address timely matters.

For example, today's KD (check later today when it's posted by Kathie) takes a look at a recent Bible translation/paraphrase called The Voice.

Aside from my inane review, you will want to pay close attention to the embedded videos and then tune in over the next two Tuesdays to at 11:30 a.m. as we review it and take your live calls and chat room questions.

Speaking of timely matters, recent reports about the current GA meeting remind me of "breaking news" about Obamacare.  Be very careful about kneejerking to the news in secular media sources that is out of context and rarely respectful to our polity.  In other words, hold your fire until we get a chance to study the results that aren't even close to being in yet; and then we'll review, study, pray, and, uh, review, study, pray...

BTW, kneejerking ain't a way to go through life; as it's usually spontaneous, reckless, and, uh, hurtful.

Trust me.

I know from the experience of my own kneejerks.
